Where do Project Managers fit into an Agile World?

Scott Ambler

Senior Consulting Partner

Certified Disciplined Agile Coach

Scott Ambler + Associates

Management is so important on agile delivery teams that we do it every single day, but that doesn’t imply that we need team managers. Having said that, there are still some manager roles needed, albeit far fewer than in the past, when we scale agile both tactically and strategically within our IT organizations. So where do the rest of the managers go?This presentation examines what happens to traditional managers when their organization adopts agile and lean strategies.

When Projects Inflict Change and what to do about that…

Change Management and Problem Solving

All Projects change things, if they didn’t, we wouldn’t waste time and money on them. The problem is that people don’t tend to like being changed, so project managers, if they want their projects to succeed, must learn to handle the fallout of their successful projects.

Despite what it often feels like – Change isn’t just Chaos – there’s an internal structure to all the resistance, denial, wailing and gnashing of teeth we encounter when people face something new. If we can come to understand that structure, why it is the way it is, then we can exploit points of leverage, to manage the natural reactions to Change.

This session will place the Chaos of Change under a microscope and identify three common patterns we can use to our advantage.

Why Did They Have to Choose Me?

The Emotional and Social Consequences of Project Work

Geoff Crane

Research Scientist

Many of us like to think that we are in charge of our own careers – but project professionals can’t entirely make that claim. After all, no sponsor will hand the keys to a multi million dollar project over to someone they don’t trust at least by reputation. This means that, to a certain extent, other people have at least as much influence over our career trajectory as we do (and possibly a lot more)! This presentation explores the uncertainty associated with project careers and looks to the science of emotional intelligence to find ways to mitigate associated risks. Emphasis is placed on developing healthy relationships, planning for career-based change and keeping your integrity under questionable demands.

Project Managers need to Think Benefits Realization

Dan Watt

Senior Director

Head, Project Delivery Office

Wealth Management

Royal Bank of Canada

The reason we do projects is to generate business value. Do our sponsors ever really get what they thought they were going to and are project teams set up to deliver what was intended? Regardless of project methodology, many projects are not set up for success. This session will discuss some of the reasons why that it is and what can be done about it.
